TO POT UNAI: CAM ON, IT ISN’T ABOUT ME

- BY HARRY PRATT

INTERNET star Unai Emery has told Arsenal fans: Focus on the team, not me.

The Spanish coach has become a social media sensation with the

Gunners faithful in recent weeks.

Those following today’s north London derby online can catch Emery in the dug-out – no doubt in typically frantic action – for the second time this season.

The Unai Cam on the official Arsenal site launched on the opening day for the 1-0 win at Newcastle – and proved an instant, traffic-driving hit.

Throw in a whopping 2.75million Instagram views of a video featuring Emery leaping and applauding a crunching tackle by youngster Joe Willock last weekend and it is clear Arsenal keyboard fanatics cannot get enough of him.

But, while they love watching the boss in full flow – waving arms, imparting instructions and generally encouraging his side – Emery would prefer not to be the centre of their attention.

Ahead of the visit of Tottenham, he said: “I’m not the protagonist, the players are the protagonists. The most important thing is the team.

“Maybe after the match there can be footage of me and other things for the supporters to look at. But the most important camera is always the one following my players on the pitch. I really, really want the focus of everyone to be on them until after the game.”

While a most reluctant Instagram “influencer”, Emery’s desire to influence a match drives his passionate displays.

He added: “I’ve been doing this all my career – in Spain, in France and now here,” explained the former Paris SaintGermain, Sevilla and Valencia coach, who turns 48 in November.

“It’s always the same in each country because I want to be active. I want to help and support the players. That’s all!

“Each match with Arsenal I’m feeling special and that means I can be as I am – with my personality, my character.

“But my responsibility is the team and to give them the best solutions. The more difficult work is for them.

“For the coach, it’s about giving them energy and, above all, being intelligent in the management of the 90 minutes.”
