SUPER JET POWERS ON TURBOS

- BY RYAN McELLIGOTT

THE reigning champion jockey Donnacha O’Brien teamed up with his brother Joseph to land the featured five furlong nursery with Air Force Jet at Navan yesterday.

The talented top weight produced a convincing display to take full advantage of a drop in class.

After racing on the pace Air Force Jet struck for home with over a furlong to run and he kept on strongly to defeat Punita Arora by a length and a quarter.

Earlier O’Brien’s title rival Colin Keane landed the opening auction maiden aboard the Noel Meade-trained Lafayette.

The 7/2 chance had to settle for a midfield finish on his debut at the Curragh last month but he was clearly all the better for that outing.

Lafayette was produced with a strong last furlong charge to get the better of Mutiny by half a length.

“That’s great. He got into a lot of trouble the first day he ran at the Curragh and we fancied him today,” stated Meade.

“I suppose we will have to look at the final of this series at Naas in October,” added the winning trainer.

Cityman could have Irish Champions Weekend on his agenda after he produced a smart display to land the sprint handicap under Andy Slattery.

Next Sunday’s Bold Lad Handicap at the Curragh could be next for this son of Slade Power who produced a career best effort under Andy Slattery.

Elsewhere Gary Carroll and Early Call defied a troubled run through the race to land in front on the line in the near six furlong handicap.
