Marathon runners to go virtual

-

THOUSANDS were set to run the Belfast Marathon today – but with the event cancelled organisers are planning a virtual race.

As well as keeping runners fit and focused on a target, the move is also hoped to help official charity Cancer Focus Northern Ireland.

Around 12,000 people should have gathered this morning along the start line at Stormont Estate to take on their run, team relay, eight-mile walk or fun run challenge.

But for the first time in 39 years organisers had to reschedule the event, which will now be held on September 20, due to the Covid-19 crisis.

Instead they have decided to stage a virtual marathon, where people can complete the 26.2 miles over a period of up to nine weeks while observing exercising and social distancing rules.

John Allen, of Belfast City Marathon, said: “It is important at this time that we try to keep some type of routine and we believe this event can help motivate people physically and mentally.”

Roisin Foster, CEO, Cancer Focus NI, added: “We fear we might not be here to continue to support thousands of people at one of the toughest times of their lives. For each day of lockdown, another 36 local people get cancer, and cancer figures are rising year on year.

“We are still providing greatly reduced counselling and family support services to as many vulnerable people as possible.”

Online entries for the virtual race will open on Thursday with the final deadline on June 19.

Participants should submit their results on or before June 30.
