‘Sack him’ plea to Johnson by police bigwigs
POLICING officials in the NorthEast reacted with unconcealed fury to news of Cummings’ trips.
Northumbria Police and Crime Commissioner Kim McGuinness called on PM Boris Johnson to “do the right thing and sack him”.
She said: “Travelling 260 miles with a deadly virus while the Government is pleading with the nation to stay home and limit the spread is a level of irresponsibility so dangerous it is at the point of criminality.
“While Dominic Cummings was enjoying his North-East retreat millions of us were going without work, isolating from our families or avoiding even the funerals of loved ones in order to protect our NHS.”
Both Ms McGuinness’ parents suffered from Covid-19, and have thankfully recovered, and she was forced to postpone her wedding to RAF officer David Prutton.
GUIDANCE
She added: “There cannot simply be one rule for those who work at Downing Street and another for the rest of us, and if Dominic
Cummings doesn’t realise this he shouldn’t be helping run the country. The Prime Minister should stop delaying, do the right thing and sack him.”
Steve White, Durham’s acting Police, Crime and Victims’ Commissioner, said: “In relation to the incident where Dominic Cummings visited Durham during lockdown, Durham Constabulary acted appropriately.
“Given that the ethos of the guidance issued from the Government was to reduce the spread, regardless of reason, by travelling to Co Durham when known to be infected was most unwise. To beat this crisis we need to be selfless.
“The response by the people of Co Durham has been exemplary, which makes this most frustrating and concerning. Incidents such as this do not help.”
