Medics march for dead friends
ICONIC landmarks across the country are glowing blue as Britain today marks 72 years since the NHS was founded.
London’s Shard, the Eden Project in Cornwall and Windsor Castle were lit up in recent nights. Blackpool Tower, the Wembley Arch and No10 are also lighting up.
In a recorded tribute, Prince Charles said: “The NHS – and the entire country – has been through the most testing time in the service’s history.
“Nurses, doctors, paramedics and countless other staff have made costly sacrifices to provide treatment for more than 100,000 patients with coronavirus and thousands more who needed care.
“We have come together as a nation to thank them for their skill, professionalism and dedication.”
The Prince paid tribute to other key workers such as farmers, shop staff and volunteers “during this dark time”. A candle was lit at St Paul’s Cathedral last night in memory of those who died. Two Spitfires will fly over hospitals in the east of England today. A nationwide applause will take place at 5pm.
