Fitzgerald should have inflicted more woe on the basement side at the RSC by converting a stoppage time sitter but Neale Fenn’s Rebels are still in deep relegation trouble. This was their sixth time in seven matches this season not to score and they have not netted away from home for a full year.
Waterford were denied a definite penalty for a Kevin O’Connor handball but City sub Dylan McGlade (inset) also rattled the crossbar.
DEFENDING world champion Judd Trump admits he has struggled with the pressure of being snooker’s biggest star.
Trump, 30, was tipped to replace Ronnie O’Sullivan as the game’s leading player after an eye-catching career start.
But he said: “It was a hindrance to me being labelled the flag-bearer.
It’s probably why I underachieved for five years in my early 20s.”
Last season Trump won four titles and this season is the first player to win six ranking tournaments.
He edged past Yan Bingtao 13-11 on Friday to reach the last eight at the Crucible. O’Sullivan and Ding Junhui finished 8-8 after the penultimate session of their clash.
Breaks of 64, 118 and 101 gave Ding a 7-5 lead but the Rocket scored
90, 89 and 73 before Ding won the final frame.
Anthony McGill won five frames on the spin to finish 8-7 behind against Jamie Clarke.
