The dress code is, ‘Come as you are, but make an effort’. Seems pretty vague PAUL MESCAL ON TONIGHT’S EMMY AWARDS

PRODUCERS of tonight’s Emmy Awards are praying Paul Mescal, Andrew Scott and Fiona Shaw do not all fall asleep.

The Irish actors are up for best acting gongs but they might have to wait until 4am tomorrow to find out if they win in the live-streamed show beamed from LA.

Cameras in 114 locations in 10 countries will follow the 138 stars who are hoping to win one of the awards.

The hopefuls will all be in London and their reactions to winning or losing will be broadcast live from their homes.

Executive producer Reginald Hudlin said: “If a winner is in London and it’s four in the morning and they’ve fallen asleep, we don’t know what’s going to happen. We’re going to have the nominees in their homes, backyards, hotels.

There’s going to be cameras across the country, in the UK, in Berlin, in Tel Aviv.”

Kildare’s Paul Mescal is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Limited Drama Series for his portrayal of Connell Waldron in the Normal People series.

He will be up against actors including Jeremy Irons ( Watchmen), Hugh Jackman (Bad Education), Mark Ruffalo (I Know This Much Is True) and Jeremy Pope (Hollywood).

Cork star Shaw has been nominated for Outstanding Support Actress in a Drama Series for her role as spy boss Carolyn Martens in Killing Eve.

Others in the category are Meryl Streep and Laura Dern from Big Little Lies, Julia Garner (Ozark), Sarah Snook (Succession) and Helena BonhamCarter (The Crown).

Dubliner Scott has been nominated for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series for Chris Gillhaney in Black Mirror. His rivals include James Cromwell (Succession), Martin Short (The Morning Show), Jason Bateman (The Outsider), Giancario Esposito (The

Mandalorian) and Ron

Cephas Jones (This is Us). Mescal, 24, revealed this week that he was excited about the awards which will be broadcast from LA’s Staples Centre.

He said: “It’s going to be very early in the morning and the dress code is, ‘Come as you are, but make an effort’.

“Seems pretty vague but I am going to make an effort — I’m really looking forward to it. It’s my first Emmys and something I’m pretty proud of.”

He said he was disappointed that his Normal People co-star Daisy EdgarJones, 22, had not been nominated for her role as his lover Marianne Sheridan. He added: “It goes without saying that the show depends on both of us, so any recognition for either of the individuals is for both of us.”
