BIG SAM’S TAKEN OFF HIS CROWN

- BY NEIL MOXLEY

JAMES MADDISON is on course for a Player of the Year nomination on his current form.

That’s the view of Leicester City chief Brendan Rodgers, who says the England international’s recent displays are hitting new heights.

The £24million signing from Norwich is producing the goods both in assists and in front of goal, scoring four and creating just as many for his team-mates in 2021.

That compares well with 12 months ago, when his contribution could be measured in just one successful strike.

Match of the Day pundits suggested last week that Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish should be on the shortlist. But with two more goals and just two fewer assists, Rodgers (right) said Maddison’s name should sit alongside that of his England colleague.

Rodgers said: “If you look at James in terms of his numbers and his quality, then he’s right up there with the very best in this league.

“He had a difficult start to the season because he was injured. But he’s found a rhythm and you see the level he’s at now. We are third in the Premier League partly because of his huge contribution to us.

“If he’s doing that, then you have to speak about him as being on that list.

“It’s consistency that’s the key. If he keeps performing as he is, then I’m sure he will be in contention. But there’s a long way to go yet.”

Even though Jamie Vardy has declared his fitness for today’s Wolves match following a groin strain, Maddison has underlined his importance to the Foxes’ cause with an assist against Leeds last weekend and two in the win at Fulham on Wednesday.

Rodgers added: “I think James recognises the role more. From understanding the game, he’s improved so much.

“The second goal at Fulham was a great example. He’s trying to get beyond the defence’s last line. There were a number of examples where he was the furthest player forward for us.

“If you think about the Chelsea game, he’s up there with Jamie Vardy and he gets his goal. There is a real joy to see that development.”
