LATE SHOW FOR GLENS

- BY KEN LAGAN

GLENTORAN were made to endure an anxious final few minutes before running out 3-2 winners over Dungannon Swifts at Stangmore Park yesterday.

Robbie McDaid (inset) combined pace with precision to burst clear and give the Glens the lead with a fine finish.

The Swifts soon hit back as Cathal McGinty levelled the scores by steering the ball home after Oisin Smyth’s deflected free-kick rebounded off the post.

Conor McMenamin restored the visitors’ advantage and sub Rory Donnelly bundled home a corner to make it 3-1 before Ben Gallagher’s late goal kept the Glens on their toes until the final whistle.

At Solitude, a pair of thumping back post headers from centre-back Jamie Harney gave Cliftonville a 2-1

win over Carrick Rangers after the visitors had opened the scoring with a fine poacher’s finish from Lloyd Anderson.

Warrenpoint Town also ran out 2-1 winners, bouncing back from an awful start to their home game against Ballymena United.

Barry Gray’s men gave away a penalty in the opening minutes, which Paul McElroy stepped up to convert.

But Kealon Dillon levelled the scores before netting a penalty of his own to send the Sky Blues packing, with

Dougie Wilson’s red card for conceding the spot-kick rubbing salt in the wounds for David Jeffrey’s side.

In Friday night’s games, Larne got their season up and running with a thrilling 4-2 win at home to

Coleraine, while Glenavon and Portadown both scored in the final two minutes as they played out a 1-1 draw in the Mid-Ulster derby at Shamrock Park.
