‘Roo up to new Rams challenge’

- JOHN RICHARDSON

WAYNE ROONEY has never ducked a challenge in his life and that’s why he is still Derby County’s boss during the most turbulent period in their history.

Transfer embargos, points deductions and long-term employees losing their jobs would be more than enough to see most people walk away.

After all, the former Manchester United and England captain doesn’t need the money and he certainly doesn’t need the fallout from the club being placed into administration.

A close confidant said: “Wayne was brought up in a hard environment and has always appreciated what he has achieved.

“Challenges during his career have become second nature. He has never been afraid of making big decisions, like leaving Everton as a teenager to go to Manchester United.

“Later leaving Manchester United to go back to Everton to try and live up to what he had become the first time around. Then moving to the MLS with DC United, who were at the bottom of the league and dragging them up by their boots.

“He also feels a loyalty to Derby for giving him a chance as a manager after initially bringing him to the club as a player.

“Wayne has probably had ambitions in his mind of becoming a manager for the last 10 years, so he is not going to give that up easily, despite the circumstances.”

It is an attitude which has gained Rooney plaudits throughout football and many believe it will bode well for the future, with the 35-year-old destined for a bigger job.

But a family member said: “For Wayne, it’s all about the here and now. If he gets that right, the future will take care of itself.”

Rooney remains a popular figure around

Pride Park and his quiet demeanour in the technical area is testimony to his continued faith in his coaching staff.
