TENEBRISM’S STAMINA TEST

- BY DAVID YATES

AIDAN O’BRIEN admits he’s “not sure” whether favourite Tenebrism has the staying power for a mile in the 1,000 Guineas at Newmarket today.

The master of Ballydoyle launches a two-pronged challenge for the QIPCOsponsored fillies’ Classic – O’Brien has won the Rowley Mile test seven times, including the past three runnings – in which Tenebrism is joined by stablemate Tuesday.

Tenebrism is the 3-1 market leader after a juvenile campaign that saw her lift the Group 1 Cheveley Park Stakes over six furlongs at Newmarket in September, six months after making a winning debut in a five-furlong maiden at Naas.

Punter opinion is divided over the daughter of top sprinter Caravaggio’s stamina, and O’Brien (above) said yesterday: “One will definitely get the trip, and the other [Tenebrism] we’re not sure about — we will only learn that in one place. We felt in the Cheveley Park she was finishing over six and it looked like she would get seven – so then there is a chance she might get the mile.

“Everything has gone well with Tenebrism since last year, and I’m very happy with everything she’s done.”

While Tenebrism, the mount of Ryan Moore, has proved herself at the top level, Tuesday – the daughter of O’Brien’s two-time

Group 1 heroine Lillie Langtry – steps into Classic company on the back of a maiden-race success at Naas at the end of March.

But the trainer, whose daughter of Galileo finished second to Guineas rival Discoveries at the Curragh last June on her racecourse bow, added of the 6-1 chance: “We didn’t think she would be ready to run after she won her maiden but she’s come forward in the last couple of weeks, and that’s why we’re running her.”
