IT’S ‘DOZIE RESULT TO PUNISH US

-

CHIEDOZIE OGBENE says Ireland must change their ways immediately and adopt a ‘win at all costs’ mentality.

The Boys in Green were left reeling in Yerevan after a losing to Armenia with an insipid display that packed no punch up front.

And boss Stephen Kenny admits his misfiring team were masters of their own downfall, with top spot in the group already looking a lost cause after one game.

But Ogbene pulled no punches with his brutal assessment of the performance and said last night: “We just have to be ruthless, it’s a results-based business.

“We need to change our mentality, to win at all costs. We need to put on a show. But today has taught us a lot about football, that we have to take our chances.

“If we sped it up in the second half I think they would have suffered, and we would have broken them. We took the foot off the pedal a small bit and we got punished.”

Ireland have yet to win a Nations League game after 11 attempts under Kenny

(above) and Martin O’Neill before him, and need to right that wrong against Ukraine and Scotland next week.

And Kenny’s lofty dreams of topping the group already look a tall order just one game in after this effort.

“We have made life difficult for ourselves,” said the boss. “Rather than focus on that we have to dust ourselves down and bounce into two home games.

“It’s a knock and there’s no getting away from that and there are no excuses really. We didn’t create enough clear cut chances and against Armenia, we should be.

“Some players are not at the level they were when they finished their season but these are the things you have to overcome and win.”
