‘Freedom for Britain ... death to traitors’

- BY NICK DORMAN,

stabbed to death on Thursday. She had been heading to a surgery for constituents at Birstall Library and was pronounced dead at 1.48pm.

Witnesses said Mrs Cox was repeatedly stabbed and her killer was heard to say words to the effect of “Br itain first, keep Britain independent, Britain always comes first, this is for Britain”.

Bernard Carter- Kenny, 77, was stabbed in the abdomen after attempting to go to Jo’s aid. He is at the high dependency unit at Leeds General Infirmary.

Mair was arrested at 1.45pm. Police discovered a single- barrel led pistol, a dagger, phone and black baseball cap at the scene, along with a wallet.

Mair is charged with Jo’s murder, GBH, possession of a firearm with intent to commit an indictable offence and possession of an offensive weapon. He has not entered pleas and was remanded in custody and taken to Belmarsh jail in South East London. He will appear at the Old Bailey tomorrow.

Mair had arrived at court in the back of a police van which made its way past the flashbulbs of a scrum of photographers.

He was ushered through a secure entrance and led into a cell in the depths of the courthouse, known for hearing all terror-related cases before they pass to crown courts.

He stepped into the dock at court No 1 just after 10am.

At one stage he looked over towards the press bench, which was so full court staff were giving out pink tickets to secure a seat.

Appearing tired, he looked considerably older and greyer than in the widely published snap from his local paper which has been published countless times since he was arrested.

Minutes later, as quickly as he arrived, he was ordered back down to the cells, transferred to another van and ferried 14 miles to Belmarsh.
