Double act is buzzing once more

-

TROY DEENEY and Odion Ighalo proved their goalscoring exploits last season were no fluke as they combined against Lorient.

The strikers scored 32 goals between them last term as WATFORD defied critics who tipped them for an instant return to the Championship.

And yesterday the pair combined again in a 2-2 draw with the French side.

Deeney fired the hosts ahead on the stroke of halftime before Ighalo made it 2-0 just before the hour.

The visitors fought back but Ighalo said: “Goals breed confidence and I always try to give my best.

“I’m happy to score, but most importantly it’s about the team performance.

“We have new players and we are still understanding what the manager wants.

“We’ve put in enough work over pre-season with new tactics. We can’t wait for the season to get started now.”

CRYSTAL PALACE striker Connor Wickham is hoping his pre-season form can earn him a place in the first team.

The Eagles have been linked with a big-money move for Liverpool’s Christian Benteke, but Wickham, who scored twice against Valencia yesterday, aims to keep his place.

“It’s good to be back and get on the scoresheet today, and hopefully I’ll continue that form in the league,” he said after Palace’s 3-1 win.

“We still have a lot to work on and stuff to build on but we’re there or there abouts now.”

Managerless HULL slipped to a 2-1 defeat to Italian side Torino in Austria. Abel Hernandez equalised for the Tigers before Cesare Bovo scored with seven minutes to go.

STOKE lost 1-0 at Hamburg, Michael Gregoritsch scoring, while Jay Fulton was the hero for SWANSEA, the young midfielder hitting the only goal in the win against Rennes.
