Late Nayl too sharp for Coyle

- By ALAN WILSON at Ewood Park

TOM NAYLOR scored an 88th-minute equaliser for the second week running to heap more misery on Blackburn Rovers boss Owen Coyle.

The home side were on course for their first win of the season thanks to goals from Craig Conway and Sam Gallagher either side of a clever diving header from Burton’s Jackson Irvine.

But the impressive Naylor (above) scored late on to leave Rovers having to settle for their first point of the season.

Coyle said: “There was always going to be a that little bit of nervousness when you don’t get that two-goal cushion.

“We are obviously disappointed about the two goals we conceded but there is a lot for us to build on for the rest of the season.”

His side looked good value for their lead after Conway opened the scoring midway through the first half with a blistering drive from 25 yards that rattled the underside of the bar before bouncing over the line and into the roof of the net.

Burton, though, reacted well to going behind and were back on level terms just before the break as Irvine brilliantly steered John Mousinho’s cross into the bottom corner.

Naylor came close to giving Burton the lead 10 minutes after the break when his 30-yard thunderbolt came crashing back off the woodwork.

Rovers weathered the storm and got themselves back in front on the hour through the head of Gallagher, on a season-long loan from Southampton.

But their hopes of a first win were dashed late on when Naylor outjumped Scott Wharton at the back post to head home Matt Palmer’s corner.

Burton boss Nigel Clough said: “As pleasing as it is to get an 88th-minute equaliser we are disappointed not to get the win.

“We have told the players to go out and play without fear this season.

“It is a beautiful stadium here and the main stand holds more fans than our entire ground.” Possession 42% 58% Shots On Target 6 3 Shots Off Target 5 6 Blocked Shots 1 5 Corners 6 12 Fouls Conceded 11 8 Offsides 5 3 Yellow Cards 2 1 Red Cards 0 0
