Eat all the pies without being swallowed up by guilt

- BY KIM CARR BY GRACE MACASKILL

HOLLYOAKS star Kieron Richardson has told of his heartbreak at four failed attempts to become a father with a surrogate mother.

The 30-year-old soap star and husband Carl Hyland have been trying for a family for 14 months.

Kieron, who plays Ste Hay, said: “We were hoping to have a baby this year.

“Unfortunately, like anyone who is trying for a baby through IVF – whether they are gay couples or not – it is a lottery.

TRYING

“The statistics when we first started it were a 70 per cent success rate. We have tried it four times, with the same surrogate mum, and we have fallen into that 30 per cent bracket of it not working.

“But we have not given up the fight and are still continuing. We are going to keep trying until it is successful.” The couple embarked on their parenting quest in July last year and have not identified their surrogate or how they found her.

Determined Kieron and Carl, who got married last year, have faith that she will bear their child.

Kieron said: “Everyone is fit and healthy, yet it is just not working. We won’t look for another mother. It is just one of those things. We won’t stop until we have our baby.”

The Manchester actor has been in Hollyoaks since 2007 and in 2009 his character became a single dad.

In 2010 Kieron came third in ITV1’s ice-skating reality show Dancing on Ice.

He came out later that year on ITV’s This Morning, after being inspired by the bravery of X Factor winner Joe McElderry, 25, to discuss his sexuality in public. He has since been praised for standing up to homophobic bullying on social media. We are a nation wobbling on the edge of a fat epidemic – with calorific treats tempting us in all directions.

But sometimes the things we think are bad for us are not such big-hitters on the flab front.

Greggs this week rolled out a pasty under 300 calories, made of sourdough shortcrust instead of a puff pastry. There’s a choice of chicken katsu curry or spicy Bombay potato filling.

It doesn’t use up too much of your recommended daily intake – men get 2,500 calories, for women it’s 2,000.

So here are some other “naughty” treats with a nice surprise for waistlines. Can Tango orange..... Starbucks Grande skinny latte............................................. Burger King apple fries............ Four McDonald’s chicken McNuggets................................. McDonald’s cheeseburger... Small shish kebab with pitta, salad and ketchup.... approx Costa prawn and mayo sandwich.................................... Two Costa gluten-free Bakewell tarts.......................... KFC regular popcorn chicken...................................... English muffin with two spoons of cream cheese.....................
