Marvin’s magical
OWEN COYLE hailed “wonderful” Marvin Emnes after the Dutch striker scored one and set up two as Blackburn secured their first Championship win this season.
Both sides had chances in an enthralling game which saw Danny Ward put the visitors ahead in the 12th minute before Craig Conway brilliantly restored parity 10 minutes later.
Home debutant Emnes, on loan from Swansea, put away the move of the match just before the half hour and Ben Marshall looked to have put the result beyond doubt when adding a third 15 seconds into the second half.
Ward’s late header set up a frantic finish but Sam Gallagher capped off a fine individual display by tapping home a fourth in injury time. Coyle said: “Emnes was a no-brainer for me. He’s been a wonderful player for many years. He came on board, he’s exciting, really enjoyed it today and the important thing is he does it consistently.” Coyle added: “It was important we got the three points, but it was the manner of the performance and how we won.
“We started the game brilliantly, we could have been two goals up, and from that we concede a counter attack goal from two very good players.”
Rotherham boss Alan Stubbs lashed out at his team’s defending and threatened to make major changes.
He said: “I can’t think of any goals that we’ve conceded where teams have completely cut us open, because we’re significantly contributing to our own downfall by making basic mistakes and we’re getting punished.
“It’s the manner of the goals that’s the disappointing thing.
“You’re just asking defenders to do their jobs.
“You have to keep working at it and keep saying the same things week in week out. If not, leave them out. That’s how you stop it.” Possession Shots On Target Shots Off Target Blocked Shots Corners Fouls Conceded Offsides Yellow Cards Red Cards 59% 41% 8 6 5 1 7 2 6 4 7 12 1 0 1 4 0 0
