Benitez: Call me, Stevie G

-

believes 36-year-old Gerrard should take the MK Dons job – if the League One club make him an offer.

Also in the frame is Gerrard’s fellow former England team-mate Frank Lampard. Benitez said: “If Stevie wants to talk I am here.

“He is a player with great experience anyway, but if he wanted my advice that would be OK.

“Each individual is different. If Stevie feels he wants to be a manager, then he should go for it.

“You don’t know for sure until you do the job – management is not just about tactics, it is also about having the right personality.”

Benitez believes that the way Gerrard was able to adapt himself to different midfield positions throughout his playing career will stand him in good stead if he decides his future lies in management.

He also feels that the opportunity to get on the managerial ladder in the lower divisions is perfect.

Benitez said: “Little by little, Steven changed his position as a player.

“For Liverpool, I played him on the right – and he scored more than 20 goals. Then when Fabio Capello was England coach, sometimes he played wide on the left side.

“Later on, Stevie’s best position for me was as a second striker behind Fernando Torres.

“When you can adjust to three or four different positions like that then your understanding of the game becomes better.

“At that time, Steven learned about different problems and how to come up with the solutions.

“That made me believe Steven has the potential to be a good manager.”
