dishevelled when on international duty. The 31-year-old insisted he’s not finished as an England player – and feels the backlash this week has been “disgraceful” and “lacks respect.”
Manchester United captain Rooney let rip after their 1-1 lunchtime draw with Arsenal at Old Trafford.
Rooney who came on as a sub after being ruled out of England’s friendly against Spain on Tuesday night with a knee injury, said: “It feels like the media are writing my obituary.
“I won’t let that happen. I am proud to play for my country and I am proud of my achievements. “It is not finished yet. “I think what has been going on is disgraceful. It shows a lack of respect and I think enough is enough. That is all I want to say.” Meanwhile, Gareth Southgate is set to be named as England manager this week after a meeting with a five-man FA panel scheduled for tomorrow. It will be left to the new boss (left) to decide whether Rooney should be punished for going on an all-night bender until at England’s Hertfordshire hotel last weekend.
Southgate advised his captain to go to bed at around 10.30pm last Saturday night after giving his players the day off following the World Cup victory over Scotland.
But Rooney – and several members of FA staff – took up an invitation to join a wedding reception.
The striker could only train for 15 minutes the following day because of a knee problem and was sent back to Manchester for treatment as Southgate prepared his men for a friendly against Spain.
FA director of elite development Dan Ashworth asked Rooney for an explanation. And Sunday Mirror Sport understands the player was assured that he wouldn’t be officially stripped of the captaincy by Wembley chiefs.
But Southgate’s first job when he takes change will be to decide whether his authority was undermined by Rooney’s decision to hit the bottle.
The FA will also tighten up their code of conduct on how England players should behave.
