I warned police he killed my son

- BY LEWIS PANTHER

THE mum of Stephen Port’s first victim says she told police “dozens of times” her son had been killed by him – and warned them he would strike again.

Sarah Sak claims she begged detectives to investigate Port after her son Anthony Walgate, 23, was found dead outside his flat with traces of date-rape drug GHB in his body.

But she says she was repeatedly told there was “nothing to investigate”.

Devastated Sarah said: “The police refused to answer any of my questions. They have so much to answer for.”

Fashion student Anthony had been hired by Port on an escort website the night he died in June 2014. He had texted a pal to say who he was meeting, joking: “In case I get killed.”

But Port claimed he found his body slumped at the door to his building as he came home.

He then admitted they met, saying he had moved Anthony outside after he had a fit in his bed. Port was arrested and charged a week after Anthony’s murder – for lying to police.

He walked free on bail, and killed artist Gabriel Kovari, 22, two months later.

Sarah believes police would have looked more closely if her son had not been gay – or had been female. The Independent Police Complaints Commission is investigating 17 officers who failed to spot links sooner.

Sarah, of Hull, said: “They ignored me – now four young men are dead. Four families ripped apart. A child could have worked out the cases were linked. I will not rest until I get justice for my son.

“Police brushed his death aside like it didn’t matter. They had the killer. They questioned him. They let him walk free to kill.”

Metropolitan Police Commander Stuart Cundy said: “I have written to the families to express our condolences.” Picture: JOHN GLADWIN
