Mind the gap, says Lambert

- At Molineux

WOLVES’ new manager Paul Lambert admitted he is looking over his shoulder at the relegation zone.

The Molineux men are only out of the bottom three on goal difference after Fernando Forestieri and Kieran Lee gave Sheffield Wednesday an emphatic win.

Lambert, whose side were booed off at half-time and the final whistle, said: “If you don’t look behind you, you are naive.

“We are in a fight along with a few others and in a dangerous position but that is why we are here to try and get out of it.

“There are a lot of games to go but we have to defend better.

“Individual errors have cost us and we are going to have to be more streetwise.

“We were a lot better in the second half, but by then the horse had bolted.”

Wolves have now gone nine games without a win and were undone by a slick first-half display by Wednesday, who scored more than once in a match for the first time in nine attempts.

Forestieri won and converted a 15th-minute penalty when he drew a foul from full-back Matt Doherty and also had a hand in Wednesday’s second, sending over a left-wing cross that Lucas Joao rolled into the path of Lee who made no mistake from 12 yards on the half-hour.

Owls boss Carlos Carvalhal was full of praise for his side, and Forestieri – who had refused to play earlier this season – in particular.

He said: “I told Fernando that he is back again. He performed very well against Fulham in the last game and today he again did very well.

“It is the Fernando we know and recognise and that the coaches and fans like. He has a fantastic environment here to have another good season and we need him.

“We are better than last season and the big difference is the efficiency. We have found a way to score goals and the level of football is very high.

“I hope we can keep this going for all of the season.” Possession Shots On Target Shots Off Target Blocked Shots Corners Fouls Conceded Offsides Yellow Cards Red Cards 52% 48% 3 6 6 2 2 1 8 5 13 14 4 0 3 1 0 0
