WIN ON ABUSE LAW

SUNDAY MIRROR

- BY NICOLA FIFIELD

ACID attack survivor Adele Bellis has hailed reports that ALL pupils are to be taught about domestic violence.

In a major win for the Sunday Mirror, the Government is understood to be drawing up plans for the lessons, which would also cover the perils of porn and sexting. We launched a campaign with brave 24-year-old Adele in November after she started vi siting schools to tell pupils her story and help them to avoid abuse.

We want all kids to get similar talks as part of personal, social and health education lessons.

Now the Department for Education is said to be working on plans to include domestic violence in PSHE lessons. And free schools and academies – which are currently exempt – could be forced to teach sex education and PSHE.

Adele, of Lowestoft, Suffolk, was scarred in an acid attack arranged by her ex. She said of the lessons: “This is great news. It will help children avoid abuse and will save lives. If I’d been taught early warning signs I’d have run a mile.”

It is thought the new proposals could be included in amendments to the Children and Social Work Bill, currently before Parliament.

A Department for Education spokeswoman refused to confirm this, but said education on sex and relationships “is vital in helping young people stay safe”.
