This was my chance to outElvis the rest, but it was hard to focus with the jewelled costumes digging into myy back. I hope it was just their rhinestones...

Later I found myself looking up the nostrils of a 6ft 4in German Elvis. “I got sick of bad Elvis acts,” the former welder told me. “Now I’m on a mission to bring the true meaning of Elvis to a new generation of fans.” “Admirable ambition,” I nodded, wondering where looking down my top ranked on his mission statement. Manson, 82, went back to California’s Corcoran state prison, where he is serving life, after a five-day hospital stay in nearby Bakersfield.

It was reported that Manson is suffering from lower gastrointestinal bleeding caused by a lesion.

He was supposed to have surgery on Thursday but doctors decided he was too weak and it was too risky.

Cult leader Manson orchestrated the 1969 killings of seven people, including heavily pregnant Hollywood star Sharon Tate.

He and four followers were sentenced to death but spared after a US Supreme Court decision in 1972.
