Allen said: “It was a very special welcome — one of the highlights of my career. I’ve kept in touch with a lot of Brentford supporters but you never know what’s going to happen. I had tears in my eyes.

“Our players gave a great account of themselves but Brentford put in a very profession­al performanc­e and got a big break from the referee with an early penalty.

“Has it spoilt my day? Not at all. I’ve been in football for 40-odd years and that reception was right up there.”

National League Eastleigh, who scored at 3-0 through Ayo Obileye, were blown away with midfielder­s Sawyers and Josh McEachran running the show.

“He was injured but he’ll be back in training on Monday,” Smith said.

“Some of the figures talked about are eye-watering but until I’m told otherwise he’s with us.”
