The most gentlemanly of gentlemen Wife leads tributes to John Hurt

-

hear of John Hurt’s passing. It was such an honour to have watched you work, sir.” Richard E Grant, who co-starred with Sir John in Jackie, released last week, said: “So so sad to have lost such an extraordinary talent and friend.” Actress Clare Higgins recalled the moment he joined Doctor Who as the War Doctor in 2013. She said: “He was simply the most brilliant complete actor. He gave himself to his role. John had a real tenderness and gentleness which is quite rare in a male actor.”

Born in Chesterfield, Derbyshire, on January 20, 1944, Sir John enjoyed a career spanning more than six decades.

His portrayal of Quentin Crisp in 1976 TV film The Naked Civil Servant earned him one of his four BAFTAs. In 1978 he was nominated for an Oscar for his co-starring role as a jailed heroin addict in Midnight Express.

And the following year he starred in hit sci-fi horror Alien.

His status as a great was secured in 1980 with an unforgettable performance as deformed John Merrick in The Elephant Man.

“No one could have played The Elephant Man more memorably,” the film’s executive producer Mel Brooks said yesterday. “He carried that film into cinematic immortality. He was a truly magnificent talent. He will be sorely missed.”

Sir John’s radio work earned him an Outstanding Contribution Award at last year’s BBC Audio Drama Awards.

This year’s ceremony takes place tonight and a tribute is expected to be paid. The BAFTA film awards on February 12 will also remember him.
