We’ll find answer to Final push
KOP icon Steven Gerrard isn’t being dismissively critical when he says that Liverpool have to add more steel to their brilliance.
Jurgen Klopp’s men – beaten in the finals of the League Cup and Europa League last season – went out of the EFL Cup in the semi-final to Southampton in midweek and stuttered again yesterday in losing 2-1 at home to Championship Wolves in the FA Cup.
Gerrard knows from bitter experience there’s nothing tougher than taking that final step to glory.
He said: “I’m really excited by this Liverpool squad, but we need to strengthen what we’ve already got.
“There’s some real quality at the club and I have really enjoyed watching them since I have stopped playing.
“But, at the same time, I’d like to see a bit more added to the squad – and, when that happens, we will see Liverpool get over the line.
“Liverpool have lost some big players and some big leaders in recent years.
“Jamie Carragher left, I left, Luis Suarez has left – and when you lose that, then it’s important that you keep adding to the squad. When you lose a player like Suarez, even signing four or five players won’t replace a talent like that. It’s tough.”
The Premier League title was the only club honour Gerrard failed to win during a glorious 17-year career with his hometown club.
He said: “The hardest thing in a game is to get over the line. I found that on a couple of occasions in the Premier League.
“When you get to a certain stage of a competition, you’re coming up against world-class teams, world-class managers and world-class players and you need that extra special bit of talent to see you through.
“Liverpool have found that over the last 12 months. They’ve been sensational up until the finals, but then they’ve just fallen short.
“That’s the bit I think they will be looking at now.
“Jurgen Klopp will be asking, ‘What do we need and how can we get those people into the set-up to help us get over that line?’.”
