Lough Eske Castle and estate in Co. Donegal has a rich history dating back to the 1400s. The current building dates from the mid-19th century and was inherited by Colonel De Vere Brooke in 1884. It changed hands several times and became a hotel from 1930 to 1939, when a fire in the ballroom destroyed a wing. By the 1980s all that remained was the outer wall with trees growing inside it. Today, after a two-year, multi-million euro renovation, it’s one of the finest hotels in Ireland, blending Edwardianstyle elegance and 21st century facilities.
