Kasper’s top of the wish list

- BY STEVE STAMMERS and JOHN RICHARDSON

ARSENE WENGER is targeting a move for Leicester keeper Kasper Schmeichel in a clear sign that he is planning to stay at Arsenal.

The Gunners chief has been tight-lipped on his future at the Emirates, with a section of supporters calling for him to go as Arsenal have again fallen short in the hunt for the big trophies.

Tomorrow the Frenchman will meet his back-room staff, who are as anxious as the supporters to know of Wenger’s plans.

But it appears Wenger is already preparing transfer options – with Schmeichel being lined up to rival Petr Cech as the No.1.

The Arsenal coaching staff have been in the dark about what Wenger will do – and they want to know what is happening.

Like the manager, the contracts of Steve Bould, Neil Banfield and goalkeeping coach Gerry Peyton all expire at the end of the season.

They feel they have the right to find out if they will be at the club for the next campaign.

The indications are Wenger will stay and sign a one-year deal with an option to extend – and is already plotting transfer market moves.

Dick Law – who handles the club’s transfer negotiations – was at the London Colney training base last week talking to several leading agents.

Schmeichel – the son of Manchester United legend Peter – has been in tremendous form.

He has played a major part in taking Leicester into the quarter-finals of the Champions League and to climb back up the Premier League table.

At 30, he is at his peak and would compete with Cech for the No.1 jersey.
