Golden era beckons, says Sheri

TEDDY SHERINGHAM is confident the players of Tottenham will be trophy winners.

Victory in today’s derby can help ensure they finish above their bitter rivals for the first time since Arsene Wenger took over at Arsenal.

But former Spurs striker Sheringham wants this to be just the start of an era of success at White Hart Lane, whether they pip Chelsea to the Premier League title this season or not.

Sheringham said: “Everything is in place. They have a good young team, a tremendous manager in Mauricio Pochettino and an exciting future with the new stadium. This could be a great time for Spurs.”

He acknowledged that to finish ahead of Arsenal for the first time in 20 years would be an achievement.

Sheringham added: “That will mean a lot to the supporters and there is still a chance to win the title. I would love to see the club push on.”

He has been hugely impressed with the form and performances of England stars Harry Kane and Dele Alli.

“Both have been excellent,” said Sheringham. “And in midfield Mousa Dembele has been outstanding. His game has developed and there is now a real end product. But no team can be successful without a secure defence and Spurs have got that.

“The goalkeeper Hugo Lloris is safe and secure and the centre backs Toby Alderweireld and Jan Vertonghen have been solid. Kyle Walker gets better and better and it’s just a pity Danny Rose has been injured.

“The important thing is to keep this team together. It is when the team start to win trophies that they can start achieving great things.”

Sheringham wants the best Spurs players to stay put. Gareth Bale and Luka Modric were sold to Real Madrid while Michael Carrick and Dimitar Berbatov moved to Manchester United.

“That kind of thing has to stop,” insisted Sheringham. “The team and the club have to progress and you don’t do that by selling the best players.”

He added: “Of course finishing above Arsenal would mean a lot. But it is trophies that count.”
