JONES: PROTECT BOSSES LIKE FOOTBALL DO
EDDIE JONES has called for a union to help rugby coaches when they are sacked – because he fears getting the bullet from England.
The boss was a guest at football’s League Managers’ Association dinner last week – and wants a similar set-up in rugby.
Jones, whose England side play the Barbarians at Twickenham today, knows what it feels like to be binned – he was sacked by the Wallabies in 2005, and fears rugby is developing soccer’s quick-fire mentality.
Leicester have got rid of Richard Cockerill and Aaron Mauger this season, while Bristol dumped Andy Robinson. Jones reckons the cast-offs need more support.
Jones (right) said: “When you get fired as a coach, there is public humiliation because you see in the paper what’s written about you and you’ve got to cope with that. Sometimes there’s a difficult situation with your employees, so, if you’ve got an organisation that supports you in that area, that’s fantastic.
“It’s moving more towards that hire-and-fire situation – so if we lose to the Barbarians, I could be looking for a new job!
“The LMA is absolutely outstanding – I’m blown away by what they do for football managers. The way it’s going with rugby coaches – take Leicester, who have had three coaches this year – there needs to be a supportive organisation for coaches.”
Today’s game will set England up for their two-Test tour of Argentina – flying out on Saturday, with matches in San Juan and Sante Fe.
Jones added: “To win the World Cup, we’d have to beat France, Argentina, Wales and New Zealand to get through to the final. To do that, you need extraordinary performances. And it starts now.”
