The Champions Trophy final between Pakistan and India is at The Oval in South London today. It’s on the former Kennington Common, where cricket was played as early as 1724 (it was also used for public executions). By 1868, up to 20,000 spectators were attending and in 1882, Australia won a Test so easily the Sporting Times printed an obituary notice for English cricket, which led to the creation of the Ashes. Today’s Oval is fully modernised, with a capacity of 26,000.
