- BY NEIL MOXLEY

EOIN MORGAN is looking to give England’s rawest Lions a bash at the big time this week.

Five uncapped players have been called into the squad ahead of the three-game T20 series against South Africa, the first of which is on Wednesday evening.

Morgan plans to blood as many as he can, with leg-spinner Mason Crane, 20, and all-rounder Liam Livingstone, 23, likeliest to figure.

England skipper Morgan said: “The guys have been exposed to some good cricket in the NorthSouth games. They’ve done really well, particularly Mason Crane.

“They are the next group of players we need to look at with respect to development. It’s important that if Ben Stokes or Adil Rashid go down we do have guys who can come in and play.

“Bringing these lads into this environment is key for me. You get to know them and to see them under pressure.” England regulars, including Joe Root, Stokes, Rashid, Moeen Ali and Jake Ball will all miss these T20’s to play day-night games at county level.

England are due to play a Test match under the lights against the West Indies in August, and the selectors want to expose key players to those conditions now.

This has given Crane and Livingstone, plus Somerset all-rounder Craig Overton, Middlesex batsman Dawid Malan and Surrey quickie Tom Curran their chances.

Morgan added: “We have been forced into this situation – but it’s no bad thing. It enables these players to be brought in and out.

“We can build their confidence, rather than just chuck them in to see if they sink or swim.”

Former England batsman Rob Key, who has followed Crane and Livingstone’s rise through his work as a TV analyst, said: “Livingstone and Crane are probably the two most exciting young talents in the country.

“Crane has one of the hardest jobs as a leg spinner but he’s got the pedigree. He’s been out to Australia and played for New South Wales — I can’t think of any other young English players who have forced their way into that quality of competition.

“Livingstone has an impressive sense of occasion. He hits big balls early wherever he plays. He’s made for the big time.”
