Russia win in ConCup

-

RUSSIA eased to a 2-0 win over New Zealand in the opening match of the Confederations Cup.

An own goal from Michael Boxall in the 31st minute got the hosts up and running in St Petersburg.

Sloppy defending by New Zealand in the 69th minute allowed Russian striker Fedor Smolov to tap in and double the lead.

FIFA president Gianni Infantino had given an opening speech prior to the tournament starting, with the first game attended by Russian president Vladimir Putin and Brazil legend Pele.

The eight-team tournament is being seen as a test for Russia before it stages next year’s World Cup.
