The average GP works just four days a week now, adding to the wait for appointmen­ts, says Prof Ian Cumming, head of Health Education England. The millennial generation wanted to work fewer hours than baby boomers, he added.

Two thirds of men with a family history of prostate cancer are dangerousl­y unaware of their increased risk of the disease. Prostate Cancer UK head Angela Culhane says: “We need men to find out their family history and ask their GP whether they need tests for the disease.”

Women who are obese when they conceive are more likely to have a baby with serious birth defects, a Swedish study found. Researcher­s found it increased cases of heart, digestion, genital and limb problems.
