UNIVERSITY BOY NORRIE HOPING TO STAY COURSE
CAMERON NORRIE is ready to take on the elite of tennis after studying sociology for three years.
The British No.6 (above), who has been given a Wimbledon wildcard, trained at the National Tennis Centre in Roehampton, south-west London, before becoming the No.1 college player in the USA.
Now, after three years of a four-year course at Texas Christian University, he is putting his studies on hold to hit the ATP Tour. “I went to college because I was a bit burnt out from tennis and I felt like I wanted to do something else,” said the 21-year-old.
“Even if you’re doing well, I would still recommend it. You never know – you could get injured or something.
“Now, I’m ready for the tour. I feel like I’ve matured a lot.
“I have put my degree on hold, but, no matter how well I do, I want to graduate at some point.”
Norrie, who faces No.12 seed Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in tomorrow’s Wimbledon opener, describes himself as being “from everywhere”.
The World No.236 explained: “I was born in South Africa, brought up in New Zealand, then I lived here, in London, between 16 and 19.
“My dad is fully Scottish and has a filthy Scottish accent. My mum was born in Wales.
“All my mum’s side and my dad’s side are Welsh and Scottish. My roots feel British.”
