Murderer claims he’s innocent after Milly’s sister reveals grief and devastation of last 15 years in book

- BY AMY-CLARE MARTIN and DAN WARBURTON

MURDERER Levi Bellfield has goaded the family of victim Milly Dowler just days after they revealed their heartache in a new book.

The serial killer dismissed the heartrending tale of Milly’s sister Gemma, 31, after she revealed her family’s 15-year torment had driven her and her mother to the brink of suicide.

Bellfield, 49, even whined his conviction left him “drained” and complained prison had robbed him of his dignity.

In comments which will heap yet more pain on the Dowler family, Bellfield protested his innocence, saying he was “not a nutter, not a fruitcake”. In comments from his cell he: Taunted the Dowlers by claiming Milly’s murderer was still on the loose. Gloated he was a “parole magnet” for inmates who make up false accusations about him to curry favour with police and have their sentences slashed. Claimed watching Milly’s parents give evidence during his trial “broke his heart” and said he tried to save them the pain. Bellfield, who is serving a whole life tariff for the abduction, rape and murder of 13-year-old Milly, made his remarks to a friend last week. He protested his innocence and called for an end to being “branded a sexual monster”. He said: “I am aware of the victim’s family’s grief and loss. I am fully aware they need closure.

“I am aware I may be their justice at present and this may ease their pain with the knowledge that the perpetrator of these horrendous crimes is behind bars. However, I am innocent.” Bellfield’s comments come after the release of Gemma’s book, My Sister Milly, last week.

DISAPPEARED

In it Gemma revealed how she and her mum considered a suicide pact if Bellfield was cleared of murder.

She wrote: “My mum said if he wasn’t found guilty, she wanted a joint suicide pact – it was that bad.

“I’ve kind of done quite a lot of therapy, but it wasn’t until 10 years later that I got diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder.” The heartbreaking volume tells the story of Milly, who disappeared on her way home from school in Walton-onThames, Surrey, in 2002.

Her body was found six months later in woods at Yateley Heath, Hants.

Bellfield was behind bars for the murders of Amelie Delagrange, 22, Marsha McDonnell, 19, and the attempted murder of teenager Kate Sheedy when he was charged with the murder of Milly – real name Amanda – in 2010 and convicted a year later.

Responding to the book’s release, he said: “I haven’t read it. I don’t want to read it I am sure it is heartbreaking, but I am not their closure.

“That’s the truth, I am not a nutter, I am not a fruitcake. I didn’t do it.”

He said his conviction was based on a “web of misconceptions and lies” and accused police of using the media as a weapon to stop him getting a fair trial.
