I want a ball with Federer

- BY PATRICK HILL

NEW Queen of Wimbledon Garbine Muguruza last night revealed she wants to celebrate her historic win by dancing with Roger Federer.

The Spaniard, who thrashed Venus Williams in the ladies’ final, was asked who she wanted to dance with at tonight’s Champions’ Ball.

Roger is favourite to win the men’s title for a record eighth time against Croatian ace Marin Cilic today – and it’s tradition for the men’s and ladies’ singles winners to dance together at the glitzy black tie event.

Asked who she would rather dance with, Garbine, 23, smiled as she said: “Oh, c’mon!” Pressed, she admitted: “Roger!” She added: “I like Cilic, I have to say seriously. But I want to see if Roger is that elegant also dancing.”

Garbine, who was just three when Venus Williams first played at Wimbledon in 1997, had earlier collapsed on to her knees and wept after winning the title in straight sets.

She said: “I had the hardest match today against Venus. She’s such an incredible player. I grew up watching her play so it was so hard playing her. “She was an inspiration and I feel incredible to play her here. There will be a big party to celebrate for sure.” Garbine, who was born and brought up in Venezuela before moving to Spain, beat Williams 7-5, 6-0 in just one hour, 17 minutes. She was presented with the iconic Venus Rosewater Dish by HRH The Duke of Kent as His Majesty King Juan Carlos de Borbon of Spain applauded from the Royal Box. The defeat was a crushing blow for Venus, but she said of Garbine: “She played amazing. She played top tennis. I have to give her credit for just playing a better match.”
