Two-year wait as Shoreham probe finishes

- BY DAN WARBURTON

PROSECUTORS have begun examining evidence to help them decide whether to bring criminal charges over the Shoreham air disaster.

Almost two years after the Hawker Hunter jet crashed into the A27, killing 11 men, police have submitted their first batch of findings to the Crown Prosecution Service.

But experts fear it could be months before the families of the victims will learn whether pilot Andy Hill, 53, will stand trial for manslaughter.

A source said: “This has been a very challenging and complex investigation.

“For nearly two years now specialist detectives and investigators have been trying to piece together the moments before that horrific crash. But officials have received the first pieces of evidence from the police which they are now examining. “There is still a long way to go until families will be told if they plan to prosecute but it’s a major step for many of those who want justice for their loved ones.” Former British Airways pilot Hill, of Sandon, Herts, was seriously injured in the crash and has been questioned voluntarily by police. Eleven men died when his vintage jet sent a fireball across the busy West Sussex road after crashing during a loop-the-loop stunt. In June, Det Supt Adam Hibbert of Sussex Police revealed the investigation was 95 per cent complete.
