Downpours flood Europe with Brits

BRITS are ditching staycation­s for European sun spots to dodge the rain.

Agents Lastminute.com, Expedia and Thomas Cook report booking rises of up to 95 per cent on last year.

Skyscanner says UK searches were up 22 per cent in the last fortnight over the previous two weeks, a 15 per cent bigger rise than last year.

Flights to Majorca, Ibiza and Malaga were popular after parts of the UK had a month’s rain in a day this week. More rain is due.

Expedia had a 95 per cent rise on France trips. Thomas Cook says Turkey is most popular. Lastminute.com bookings have risen 20 per cent.

ABTA’s Sean Tipton said: “Members are reporting strong late demand for countries around the Med.”

Skyscanner said low August air fares had added to the surge. Offers this week included £49 return, Manchester to Menorca.
