Scott’s cake is a slice of 1911 history
A FRUITCAKE taken to the Antarctic by Captain Robert Scott’s doomed expedition in 1911 could still be edible.
The cake was found as conservationists searched through rusty tins left at a hut at Cape Adare.
Still wrapped in its paper, it was made by Huntley & Palmers, a brand loved by the explorer.
Lizzie Meek of the Antarctic Heritage Trust said it “looked and smelled edible”. She added: “It’s an ideal high-energy food for Antarctic conditions.”
Scott went on to reach the South Pole but died on the return. The cake and other artefacts will be displayed at the hut.
