Frank and Ricky’s bid is a belter
FORMER world boxing champion Frank Bruno has launched a new fight to help people with mental ill health.
He is spearheading a foundation promoting exercise and non-contact boxing as a way for people to counter depression and bipolar disorder.
Frank, 54, is backed by a string of stars who joined hundreds of boxing fans at the foundation’s launch at Champneys Health Spa in Tring, Herts.
The celebs included fellow ex-world champ Ricky Hatton, football’s Ian Wright and EastEnders star Jake Wood.
Frank, who suffers from bipolar disorder, said: “The aim is to bring healthy body and healthy mind approaches together to provide a holistic and enjoyable approach to supporting people with problems.”
Ricky, who has battled depression, said: “Frank is showing he is as big a champ outside the ring as he was in.”
Champneys owner Stephen Purdew sponsored the event, which raised thousands for the foundation. He said: “Frank’s work is inspirational.”
Bruno has been campaigning alongside the Sunday Mirror and the Time To Change initiative to break down the stigma around mental health.
He will detail his recovery in a new book Let Me Be Frank, out next month. ■■See thefrankbrunofoundation.co.uk
