but following their surprise split the singer tells me he no longer believes in marriage: “you should be scared of it. I very much believe two people should be together.

“I’m very much a romantic. but marriage, the institution of it, is like an outdated contract. It doesn’t work in today’s society. Look at the statistics. It’s a harsh reality. It’s absurd. The institution of ‘death do us part’, it’s like... bloody hell.”

The 54-year-old says: “I’m single, whatever that means. Sure, I have people I see. I do have a lot of love in my life now and that’s very fulfilling.”

The couple were famous for their outrageous Halloween parties. but Seal says: “That wasn’t my idea, that was more my ex’s... charade. I was a team player but that wasn’t my thing.”

He also said the reason he appeared on America’s Got Talent with judge Heidi, 44, last month was for their four kids.

He says: “Heidi and I are functional, we’ve got no choice, we’ve got four kids. I went on the show for them.”

Seal is back with a new album of modern classics titled Standards, released on November 10.
