Wazza so generous

-

WAYNE ROONEY is warmly remembered by two former members of Manchester United’s backroom staff – after he bought them Premier League trophies.

Ex-United goalkeeping coach Tony Coton revealed Rooney was surprised that not all members of Sir Alex Ferguson’s backroom staff were awarded medals for the 2007 title triumph.

The striker put it right by buying Coton and assistant boss Mike Phelan a replica silver trophy worth £5,000 apiece. The tale is included in Coton’s autobiography.

Coton said: “Wazza couldn’t believe that a club like United could be so small-time when it came to sharing out the spoils.” ■■There to be Shot At by Tony Coton is published on September 21. It is available for order at www.decoubertin.co.uk/Coton
