Apprentice’s Bianca helps the homeless

- BY VIKKI WHITE

APPRENTICE star Bianca Miller-Cole has become a mentor to the homeless.

Bianca, who was the runner-up on Alan Sugar’s BBC business reality show in 2014, runs a successful nude hosiery business.

She is now working with London-based charity Evolve Housing and Support to help homeless people become entrepreneurs themselves.

Bianca, 28, said: “I truly believe everyone has the opportunity to be an entrepreneur and meeting the customers at Evolve is so inspiring because some of them have overcome so much. With the right opportunities, knowledge and support, they’ll be able to do great things.”

Evolve works with 2,000 people a year. Visit www. evolvehousing.org.uk.

One of the memorials being restored with the help of the WMT is the site of that rusty collection box: the Eleanor Cross in the Yorkshire village of Sledmere – seen far right.

It is dedicated to soldiers from the area who served in World War One.

Men like Sir Mark Sykes, who helped broker one of the most controversial treaties of the 20th century – the SkyesPicot Agreement.

Officially named the Asia Minor Agreement, the 1916 secret pact arranged to carve up the Ottoman Empire between the Allied forces in the event of victory.

Although it never came to fruition, the treaty effectively set the political scene in the Middle East for the next century.

Yet this monument to Sir Mark and his comrades is a pale imitation of its proud past. Stone statues and brass effigies are dirty and discoloured. Coats of arms are fading – and that rusting box, which has received modest collections down the years, completes a sorry picture.

But there is a brighter future – here, at least. The cross has been registered as a Grade I listed heritage site and a WMT grant will help restore its former glory. Now Sir Mark’s family are backing our campaign in the hope other memorials across Britain can also be saved.

Father-of-two Christopher Simon Sykes, the war hero’s grandson, said: “It’s a magnificent monument. It would be awful to see the Eleanor Cross fall into disrepair. History is so important. It’s crucial people have a sense of it through such monuments. It’s amazing the difference volunteers and donations make.”
