very good venues – so we knew the side we would face.

“All we needed to do was change the tempo – and we saw that in the second half, when we were much better.”

Burton have now failed to score in four consecutive Championship outings after Lloyd Dyer had an effort cleared off the line and Jake Buxton skewered a great chance wide.

Boss Nigel Clough said: “For all the work you do in the middle of the pitch, results normally come down to what you do in both penalty areas.

Nuno admitted: “Today was not our best performance. There was too much stopping and holding. We achieved three goals in the second half but must manage the final minutes better.

“The referee’s job is a difficult one but I saw too much holding of our players so he must stop and punish these situations.

“I’m not complaining about their game plan. It’s my job to find solutions but there’s no solutions for holding.”

Preston boss Alex Neil also had his grievances – mostly with referee Stephen Martin.

“My feeling is one of frustration,” said Neil (right).

“The penalty given for their second goal was extremely harsh because our player clearly got a touch on the ball.

“For the third goal our goalkeeper was clearly impeded as he tried to clear the ball and they scored with the breakaway from it.
