VILLA ACE NETS TWICE TO HURT HOOPS

- DAVID McINTYRE

I know that because I follow them. So this was a great win. “The majority of my friends, especially the local ones, support QPR, so I think I’ll get a lot of stick. I’m not going to look at my phone!” Villa boss Steve Bruce (below) was full of praise for Adomah, who somehow went under QPR’s radar as a youngster. He played for an amateur team in nearby Chiswick and then non-League Harrow Borough before being picked up by Barnet at the age of 19. “Albert has added goals to his game, which is great,” Bruce said. “He’s done very well. At the start of the season he wasn’t in the team and he didn’t moan or groan. “He got on with it, came into my office and said: ‘I’ll prove you wrong’. He trained well, worked hard and when he gets his chance he takes it.

“The reaction when QPR scored was great and we looked a very decent team, especially at the top end of the pitch.

“The way we played pleased me, We played it forward, were energetic and looked a threat.”

Bruce’s side fell behind after failing to deal with Luke Freeman’s corner. Matt Smith’s header resulted in a scramble which ended with Mackie scoring from a yard out.

Villa responded strongly and were awarded a penalty moments after Adomah’s right-footed effort bounced up on to the bar.

Jack Robinson was adjudged to have used his hand to block Robert Snodgrass’ shot and Adomah slotted the spot-kick.

During a lively start to the second half, Villa youngster Keinan Davis headed narrowly wide and Smith went close with a first-time shot from Freeman’s cross as both teams pushed forward in search of a second goal.

It was Villa who found it courtesy of a fine finish by Adomah, who drifted away from Alex Baptiste to collect Conor Hourihane’s pass and steered a low shot beyond keeper Alex Smithies and in off the far post.

Furious Rangers boss Ian Holloway insisted referee Darren England was wrong to award the all-important penalty against the unlucky Robinson. Holloway said: “I’ve looked at the handball. It does get to you.

“Is that deliberate? Did he have time for it to be deliberate? The referee’s given it, I think he’s wrong and so do my lads.

“I felt we deserved something out of that game.” Possession 51% 49% Shots On Target 4 6 Shots Off Target 6 13 Blocked Shots 4 7 Corners 4 6 Fouls Conceded 12 12 Offsides 3 2 Yellow Cards 2 3 Red Cards 0 0
