High Streets to lose more jobs in shops
MORE high street shops face closure as retailers struggle to cope with falling demand and rising debts, experts warn.
It comes amid reports Toys R Us is poised to close around a quarter of its 106 stores and shed 800 jobs.
Thomas Cook and the bank RBS have already announced they are axing a string of branches.
Retail analyst Richard Hyman expects more closures in the New Year, with some big names disappearing altogether.
He said: “Operating these businesses is too expensive and the internet is a cheaper way of reaching your market.”
Toys R Us said reports of closures were “pure speculation”, adding: “We are open and focusing on the busy Christmas period.”
