GARETH’S HOLS DILEMMA

- BY JOHN CROSS

GARETH SOUTHGATE will ask senior players whether they want to take their holidays before the World Cup.

Southgate plans to canvas opinion at the next England get-together in March, which could see players jet off for a break before the tournament.

The Premier League season finishes on May 13, which is more than a month before England kick off their World Cup campaign against Tunisia on June 18.

Three Lions boss Southgate is planning a training base at St George’s Park and two pre-World Cup friendlies, but there will be a big gap as England are one of the last teams to play in Russia.

Former England captain Wayne Rooney admitted he made a mistake, going on holiday to Las Vegas before Euro 2012, while the squad voluntarily gave up their passports before Euro 2016 to stop them going away.

Southgate will want the players fresh, but it will also be a test for them to put England before an end-of-season break.
