ay he ake as all in claret and blue. Michail Antonio ran himself to a halt in the lone striker’s role and Arnautovic was busy just off him.

Pedro Obiang, arguably the pick of the bunch, was like a brick wall alongside Mark Noble in midfield as they frustrated the life out of Cesc Fabregas and N’Golo Kante.

When the ball did reach Eden Hazard and Alvaro Morata, Winston Reid, Angelo Ogbonna and Aaron Cresswell barely gave them time to breathe. And had Morata scored late on when he finally found a way through – which he should have done – West Ham would justifiably have felt hard done by. The Chelsea striker will no doubt still feel today that referee Graham Scott should have awarded a penalty when Reid grabbed his shirt in the first half. Although Reid would have felt equally aggrieved had the spotkick been given. As it was, West Ham held firm, unlike last week against league leaders Manchester City. And those two performances and these three points have finally given Moyes and his men a platform to build on. “I’m always happy when I win,” said Moyes (left). “I used to say in the early days with Bill Kenwright the best feeling for a manager used to be the Saturday night feeling, when you get a win and how good it makes you feel.

“But I came off, went into the dressing room, praised the players and put my jacket on and thought, ‘Oh, no, I’ve got Arsenal in midweek’.

“That’s football management, so I’m obviously really pleased, I have a big smile, but I have to get back to work very quickly because of the level of opposition coming up this week.”

Moyes deserved his moment, however brief, after a difficult start to life in East London. He added: “We did the job, we were really well organised with the game-plan. Taking it from the Manchester City game you might have said it would not be a surprise if West Ham got something against Chelsea.”

Chelsea fell behind when Zabaleta found Antonio, who in turn found Arnautovic, and the Austrian shared a neat one-two with Manuel Lanzini. He eased sideways of Cesar Azpilicueta

and Thibaut Courtois had no chance with his calm finish.

Hazard sent a shot across goal but it was no trouble for Adrian, who kept the keeper’s jersey after replacing Joe Hart against City, his parent club, last week.

Chelsea pushed on after the break but Reid blocked superbly from Andreas Christensen. And when Morata blazed into the side netting, the West Ham faithful blew a sigh of relief.
