stop for the £11.5million forward from Benin, who scored twice on the first day of the season but has since struggled for fitness with a heel injury.

His first goal here, from a Chris Lowe corner headed on by Christopher Schindler, struck Mounie on the thigh and sailed past Mathew Ryan.

And just before halftime Aaron Mooy sent over a cross, nodded back by Mathias Zanka and Mounie was in the right position to head home.

Huddersfield coach David Wagner said: “I’m really pleased that Steve got his two goals, his first after the injury.

“I thought his overall game was good too.

“There was very little to moan about. It was overall a very good performance from the pitch to the stands, full of energy, aggression and desire, everything we wanted to show.”

Both these teams have had mixed fortunes this season, doing enough to suggest top-flight survival on occasion – then being on the receiving end of some serious tonkings. Huddersfield had leaked 13 goals in four games before this match and lost five in six. Crucially that only win had come against fellow strugglers West Brom.

Brighton, thrashed by Liverpool last week, had only conceded seven goals in seven away games, which would suggest

Huddersfield have won three of their last four home games in the Premier League, with the only defeat in this run coming against Manchester City.

With his two goals against Brighton, Steve Mounie has become Huddersfield’s top scorer in the Premier League. Two of his four goals in this campaign have come via headers. ■■The 2-0 win for Terriers was their first Premier League home victory by more than a one-goal margin. yesterday’s performance was well below their best.

Boss Chris Hughton agreed: “There wasn’t a player who stood out and had that good a game. It’s disappointing. We never gave ourselves a chance.”

While Brighton hardly conjured up a chance, the Terriers snapped at them incessantly. You have to feel for Tom Ince, who started the game with ‘no goals from 32 shots’ this season – and finished with no goals from a few more.

The crowd were willing him on but there was no self-belief as he blew a oneon-one with Ryan and then weakly shot instead of testing the keeper. An Ince goal would have been the icing on the cake, but three points is sweet enough.
